An old manuscript, a new beginning
I have been writing for many years. When I reread a draft of They Call us Angels that was more than fourteen years old, the story suddenly came back to me. That led to my decision to develop it further and publish it.
How my stories take shape
I start with a broad outline and step into my characters’ shoes as I write. Their choices should grow out of their circumstances and what drives them. If that makes a different direction more convincing than the one I originally imagined, my plan changes too.
Music plays a big part. A soundtrack can spark an entire scene in my mind. Fantasy and mystery also feature in my reading and the shows I watch – including books by Kevin Hearne, Brandon Sanderson and Patrick Rothfuss, as well as Buffy and Supernatural.
I develop the ideas, characters and plot myself. I also use AI tools for background research and language revision.
Away from the manuscript
Professionally, I am a biochemist working in science and innovation management. Since 2019, I have managed the Medizin.NRW cluster office at DLR Projektträger. A DLRmagazine profile offers a glimpse into that work.
I play PC games. I also play and run tabletop roleplaying games, especially World of Darkness. At my desk, film soundtracks and a cup of green tea are usually part of the routine. I find balance on the rowing machine or out hiking.
Writing profile
Patrick Guidato is the author and creator of the Earthsoul Saga. His fiction combines dark fantasy, urban fantasy and science fantasy with reimagined mythological motifs. Recurring themes include self-determination, moral ambiguity, identity, consciousness and the responsible use of power.

They Call us Angels is the current entry point into the Earthsoul Saga and opens its first narrative cycle. The overarching universe is designed to encompass several interconnected series exploring different characters, worlds and genre emphases. A parallel novel, They Call us Witches, is already in development alongside the events of They Call us Angels. The English edition is available as a Kindle eBook; the German edition is available as both a Kindle eBook and in print.
